Electronic Test Technician
Department: Manufacturing
Location: Champaign, Illinois
Commitment: Full-Time
Cobalt Digital Inc. develop and manufacture signal processing equipment for the broadcast industry. The company is based in Champaign and was founded in 1997. Cobalt Digital has won many awards for product innovation including a 2018 EMMY. The company is looking to expand its test department and are seeking a full-time electronic test technician. In this role you will test and process Cobalt Digital products prior to shipment to customers. This position reports to the Director of Manufacturing. Cobalt Digital offers group health insurance, a 401(k) with matching contributions, and a generous company holiday schedule.
A typical day in Cobalt’s test department will include processing untested products as they arrive from our factories. The work is in a fast-paced environment and shifting priorities can be expected depending on customer, engineering, and sales requirements.
The successful candidate will ideally have the following skills:
- Experience reading and interpreting test procedures, schematics and engineering drawings
- Familiarity with measurement tools such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, and test signal generator monitors and analyzers
- Have an understanding of electronic circuit theory and design
- Ability to troubleshoot printed circuit board assemblies to the component level
- Soldering skills and ability to do precision work
- Strong attention to detail
- Communicate and describe unexpected issues to supervisors and/or engineering as they arise
- Additional training would be given as required
- Have a positive and energetic attitude and enjoy a challenging and rewarding environment

Sales Engineer
Department: Engineering
Location: Flexible
Travel Requirements: the position will require a significant amount of travel, both domestic and international, as the Sales Engineer will need to support the Sales Directors in their respective regions. The Sales Engineer will also need to spend a significant amount of time at the Cobalt Headquarters in Champaign, Illinois.

Role and Responsibilities:
The Sales Engineer will assist the Sales Team and communicate complex technical solutions to Cobalt customers. The candidate must have extensive knowledge of the video and audio signal processing industry and the underlying technologies.
The Sales Engineer will team with the Sales Managers to help provide technical assistance to the sales process by recommending product or services based on the customer’s needs. Interaction with the engineering group will be necessary to communicate customer requirements and/or issues.
- Identify current and future sales requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual customers in collaboration with the sales team.
- Provide product technical information by answering questions and requests.
- Develop sales team and customers by providing technical material and training.
- Help with technical proposals: workflow diagrams and product recommendation.
- Prepare sales engineering reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information on sales, engineering, competitive landscape and application trends.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications.
- Contribute to sales engineering effectiveness by identifying short-term and long-range issues that must be addressed, courses of action and solutions’ implementation.
- Assist main industry events such as trade shows: equipment planning, configuration, installation/pack up.
- Support customers’ equipment evaluations/demos.
- Communicate between sales/customer feedback and engineering.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Senior FPGA Developer
Department: Engineering
Location: Flexible
Commitment: Full-Time
Role and Responsibilities:
- Write RTL for audio/video processing modules, network interfaces, packet processing and CPU data movement.
- Work with board designers to determine FPGA pinouts.
- Assist board designers in bring-up and design validation.
- Work with software engineers to integrate FPGA functionality into the overall product.
Requirements:
- BSEE or equivalent.
- At least 5 years of experience developing RTL code in Verilog and/or VHDL.
- Experience with Xilinx and Intel/Altera development tools.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent documentation skills, including module APIs for software integration and interface specifications for IP blocks.

Senior Hardware Designer
Department: Engineering

Role and Responsibilities:
- Board level design for audio/video products, including analog and high-speed digital circuits.
- Work with board layout and mechanical contractors.
- Board bring-up, including basic software and scripting as needed.
- Create and maintain BOMs and product documentation.
- Assist with product manufacturing as needed.
Requirements:
- BSEE or equivalent.
- At least 5 years of experience in board design. More experienced engineers are encouraged to apply.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Some experience writing RTL code for FPGA.

Senior Software Engineers
Department: Engineering

Role and Responsibilities:
- Work with hardware and FPGA engineers to bring up new designs.
- Develop embedded solutions that include audio, video, compression, and networking as needed.
- Some minor GUI design and interfacing as needed.
Requirements:
- B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent, or B.S. in Electrical Engineering plus coding expertise.
- At least 5 years of experience in software development; an M.S. or other advanced degree can be considered equivalent to 2 years of experience.
- Fluent in C/C++ and multi-threaded programming.
- Experience in development for embedded Linux environments, including Buildroot, CMake, bash scripting, and git.
- Experience in low-level programming, including Linux kernel device drivers.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Desired, not Required:
- UI/Ux experience, full-stack web development from understanding and interfacing c/c++ all the way to HTML-5, JavaScript and css.
Additional Information:
The ideal candidate will have previous experience with writing IP networking code at the user level, a good understanding of streaming protocols, and some knowledge of digital audio and video, both baseband and compressed. Senior Technical Writer
Department: Engineering

Role and Responsibilities:
- Works with the technical staff to understand and document product operation.
- Works with the marketing department to support their activities, including the following:
- Maintenance of the Cobalt Digital web site.
- Preparation of marketing materials, such as brochures, product briefs, and print/online advertising.
- Creates drawings and block diagrams to illustrate product operation.
Requirements:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Adobe FrameMaker.
- Fluent in C/C++ and multi-threaded programming.
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or industry experience.
- A minimum of 5 years' experience as a technical writer or copy editor.

Technical Support Specialist

Cobalt is looking to expand its Customer Service and Technical Support department and is seeking a full-time technical support specialist.

Duties:
- Assist Customers with technical setup questions, troubleshooting efforts, and product specific solutions.
- Take ownership of customer issues through to resolution with prompt and accurate feedback to customers.
- Research, diagnose, troubleshoot, and identify solutions to resolve issues.
- Use procedures for proper escalation of unresolved issues.
- Ensure proper recording and closure of all issues through a tracking system.
- Prepare accurate and timely reports, as needed.
- Document knowledge in the form of knowledge base technical notes and articles.
- Provide on-site support, as required.
Candidate Skills:
- Technical knowledge of broadcast systems.
- Customer service experience in a technical support environment.

Test Engineer
Department: Engineering
Location: Champaign, Illinois
Commitment: Full-Time
Role and Responsibilities:
- Create test plans for new and existing products.
- Create test automation for new and existing products.
- Maintain the bug database, including entering, assigning, and regressing bugs.
- Create regression testing for existing products and features.
- Work with Customer Support to re-create field issues.
Requirements:
- BA/BS degree with at least 5 years of experience in a related field, or 8 years of experience in a related field.
- Familiarity with test equipment such as oscilloscopes, test signal generators, and audio/video test equipment.
- Familiarity with at least one programming or scripting language.
- Good understanding of IP networking.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
